There are several types of natural gas space heaters, here we will look at the units that heat a home environment by sending warm air throughout the house.
These can be quite cost efficient due to the heating power of gas and the reasonably unit costs. However most homes with this system are probably not getting the best performance from the unit.
It is important to try and keep the system running well - most households will find that the heating bill is their single biggest gas usage.
If you run a forced air central gas heating system then it will almost undoubtedly have a filter. This needs checking monthly during the heating season. If you cannot see through the filter when you hold it to a light you need to clean or replace it - look at your user manual. This will make a big difference. When you put the panel back, make sure it is located properly.
Wall and floor furnace designs will have ducts in the room - here the filter needs to be cleaned or vacuumed (as appropriate).
Do not obstruct the places where the heat comes out with furniture or you will have to turn up the thermostat just to heat your sofa! Things too close to vents can also be a fire hazard.
Another great way to save on your heating bills is to look at the insulation of your home - check the caulking etc. Have a home energy audit done!
