Radiant heat for floor joists is one of the most effective and pleasant ways to bring warmth to your home in winter. It is not a light undertaking however, since clearly you will need to lift floorboards to fit this kind of heating. It can well be worth it however.
This kind of heating belongs to the family of forced hot water heating systems - this means that you need a boiler and a pump, along with some system for delivering the heat - the radiators. The choice of fuel for the boiler is wide and the final decision depends on what fuel (gas, oil, wood, coal) is easily and cheaply available where you live.
The novel thing about these hot water radiant floor heat systems is the radiator itself. In place of a big cast iron monstrosity in your rooms, the radiators are the large pipes themselves and they run under the floor, turning the entire floor into one big, warm, radiator.
Under floor hot water heating systems are very pleasant indeed - they do not waft air around drying out the atmosphere like some heating systems do, and they heat from your feet upwards. Because they do this, and because they cover a large part of the floor the rooms heated in this way are evenly heated (no cold spots).
It is also an economical form of heating if you choose your boiler well (something economical with a good efficiency rating). And because of the even heat mentioned above, most people find they do not need to raise the thermostat like they do in those rooms with cold spots.
