Two main concerns have changed the face of home heating in recent decades. One is an ever-increasing environmental concern, and the other is a greater understanding of what makes healthy heat. Hydronic radiant floor heating systems scores well on both these points, despite having the longest history of all forms of central heating.
Under floor hot water heating systems can be fed by any type of boiler that is capable of heating up the amount of water needed. This is one of the benefits of the system, since it means you are free to choose the most appropriate boiler fuel for your needs.
So if you have a supply in your area, you can take advantage of natural gas heating value. If you know of a sustainable wood source you could look to the high tech modern wood burning stoves. Electricity works (though it is unlikely to be the cheapest or most environmentally friendly option) as does heating oil.
The great thing about underfloor forced hot water heating systems is that the radiator is the whole floor. Instead of a blistering heat from a single radiator, you get a gentle heat from all over. It moves gently upward without disturbing the air much, so it does not lift dust and other problematic allergens into the air.
It is not the easiest heating system to fit, but it may well be worth it. Certainly the Romans thought so - it is a central heating system that has been sued for over two thousand years...
