The basics of electric vs hydronic radiant heat

It is natural, when looking at the vast choice of types of heating that are currently being marketed to ask the simple question - which wins out in the electric vs hydronic radiant heat battle?

It is a simple question, and though the answer is not quite so straightforward, the issues are pretty easy. There is no definite answer only because the choice depends on your setting.

To take an extreme example: say you live in an uptown apartment building with one bedroom and no building heat. Well the odds are that space is an issue, and you will clearly not want to put in a boiler if you do not need to. Electric wall heaters might be just the right thing for you. They are radiators (healthful heat, some argue), they are reasonably efficient, and they are easy to install. Most importantly they do not need a separate boiler. For a small space the cost savings that might be realized by a different system are probably going to be marginal in any case.

On the other hand if you live in an area with seriously cold winters and you have a good sized house, the odds are that hydronic heating systems will both be more effective in keeping the cold at bay, and significantly cheaper to run. This is likely to be the smart choice for you. Now all that remains is decide which of the enormous range of hot water systems is the one you want...
