Replacing home heating oil storage tanks

Home heating oil storage tanks do not last forever. They rust and fail, becoming an environmental hazard and fairly useless for the job of storing your heating oil.

Given home heating oil prices you probably want to be sure that the tanks are not leaking oil. The potential damage to the land around your home is just one other very good reason to get them checked.

If you know when they were installed then you should expect them to last up to 15 years. Checking might begin when they reach ten years of age. If you do not know when the were installed (you bought the house with them in place, for example), or if you are not using them, you should get them checked.

Checking the tanks is a specialist job if they are underground, and it is not likely to have been considered in any home survey that was commissioned by the home owner.

Interestingly it is not the kerosene that allow the tanks to rust but water. If water gets into the tanks it needs to be removed. In fact there are fuel additives that your supplier will be able to tell you about that will bring the water out of the tank with the fuel. This kind of care will help you tanks live out their full lives.
