The home heating propane tank

If you do not have a natural gas supply, but want to take advantage of gas heating for your whole home then propane makes a great alternative. To make it really worthwhile you need a home heating propane tank.

Propane heating stoves and water heaters need gas in vapor form (as a gas). Propane is delivered to your tank in liquid form - as the other name for propane, Liquid Petroleum Gas, suggests. The vaporization takes place in the top part of the tank. It is then taken off by a tap and delivered to your unit.

There are some other things that are needed to get gas heating systems working properly. There will be some kind of regulator to get the pressure right for the appliance you are running.

One other thing that users with tanks may need is a vaporizer. This will be needed in some colder areas where the cold winter weather means that the LPG is not vaporized quickly enough. Basically these are little heaters that encourage the liquid to gas change.

The tanks that are used at the LPG distributors are very big - maybe thirty thousand gallons. However a domestic tank could be as small as a hundred gallons or as large as around two thousand. With a suitable tank installed your propane source is almost as convenient as natural gas.
