About electric floor heat

Electric floor heat is one of the most pleasant and convenient ways of heating our homes. There is something quite special about having warmth under foot - maybe it is that cold feet are one of the things associated with winter. Warm feet in winter feels like real luxury!

Certainly the romans thought so, and the rich and powerful in that ancient empire always put underfloor heaters in their villas. The system they used is still in use today - hot water sent through big pipes laid under the floor. It works a treat, though these days oil or gas is more likely to be the power source than the wood (or maybe coal) the Romans relied on.

It turns out that radiant heat flooring is also really effective and cost efficient - because of the even temperature it creates, most people choose to set the thermo a little lower.

The shortcoming of this system if your house is already built is that it means some upheaval, maybe even some redesigning. Luckily there are electric systems that are much easier to install.

A classic is laying electric heat strips under tile floor - this is something that can easily and cost-effectively done when new tiles are laid. It is particularly good because it offsets the unpleasant coldness that puts some people off buying tiles. There are similar electric systems that can easily be installed under carpet. Certainly worth a look!
